Comments about the visit to the Sogliano dump

Friday, January 9th, 2009

I went to the landfill in “Sogliano” with my class on 9/12 , because we  have been studying  sustainable development . I learned many   things. l learned the end of rubbish and operations of the landfill . The landfill collects the rubbish and produces energy . The landfill in “Sogliano” earns money from the garbage that they collect and also from the energy they sell . I liked this excursion with my class.

I didn’t go to the Sogliano dump because I was bad, but It would have liked to go to visit it for understanding how it works.
I think there should be more dumps in all countries in order to try and avoid as much as possible the transport of rubbish by lorries from one country to another.

A look at the to Sogliano Landfill.
On the 9th of December me and my class went to the landfill of Sogliano and we learned where our rubbish goes.
After a lot of checks, the waste is transferred into the area of cultivation. Cultivation is the preparation and compaction of waste; during the cultivation, drains and sinks allow the suction the biogas produced by the degradation of waste.
The biogas is the end product of natural degradation of the organic material.
The reject of this process is the leachate, the contaminated liquid produced by the decomposition of the waste, and his treatment is carried out in purifiers.
The environmental restoration consists in covering the waste with natural land, in grass seeding and planting of trees and bushes.

The Landfills.
One  of the better solutions for the disposal of waste is the landfill.
The landfill is where the waste is recycled, it is different and it is made underground.
The landfill is near many  waste lands o badlands.
A badland is a type of arid terrain where there are sedimentary rocks and clay-rich soils that have been extensively eroded by wind and water.
The waste is deposited in  small layers with the ground layers.
The toxic products of the decomposition are taken through underground tubes.
The land surface is grown and many plants are planted.
Hence the area will become a good and green land.

Last week my school came to my hometown, Sogliano al Rubicone, for a day visit of the local garbage dump and an exhibition called “Mongarte” , where the sculptures have been made by using waste materials, like old iron, tinplate bin, bootle glass. But the most interesting thing was the visit of the garbage dump. We saw the preliminary selection centre, where the recycle material is selected. Then we saw the real garbage dump were the rubbish is buried. This is a controlled garbage dump, all thinga are done with respect for the environment. I think this was a very interesting school visit.

The SOGLIANO DUMP.

The Sogliano dump isn’t situated near Sogliano but in the periphery, about ten kms away. It doesn’t cause damage to the environment and it follows the rules of sustainable development. For example the rubbish that can’t be recycled is burnt to create electrical energy that is sold to the electricity company, Enel. It receives rubbish from Forlì, Cesena and San Marino. It’s also a good business that produces a big income for Sogliano. It can be used for another 10 years and then it will close but it will be controlled for many other years.

Trip to Sogliano.
The first step of the trip to Sogliano was the landfill, where an attendant  showed us how badlands are filled  with the garbage.
After that, we saw from the coach some badlands in the area, already closed and only one in the filling stage.
The last phase of the trip included a visit to the exhibition “MongArte” in the centre of Sogliano.
This exhibition showed various handmade sculptures composed this year by an Egyptian artist.
These sculptures were all built with biodegradable materials.

Sogliano is a small town in Emilia-Romagna.
It is situated at 362 metres above the level of the sea.
The municipality of Sogliano is very rich, thanks to the dump for urban refusals.
In this dump garbage is destroyed and recycled.
The garbage is put in great holes in the ground and buried.
Then the ground is cultivated and enriched.
The energy drawn by the gases produced by the exhalations of the ground
and recycled material are then sold.

Mattia Babbini, IV E, I.T.I.S “Blaise Pascal” (Cesena)

On the 9th of December we went to the dump of Sogliano. When we arrived there was a guide that talked about the functioning of the dump.
The refusal is transferred in a cultivation area. After that the refusal is made compact and throw into the area. During the cultivation, there are a lot of drains and sinks for the suction of  the biogas produced by the degradation of the refusals.
During the natural degradation of the organic material biogas is produced.
The environmental restoration is extended for a lot of years and to do that the area is covered with natural land, by grass seeding and planting of trees and bushes.

Sogliano is a one horse town situated in Emilia-Romagna near Cesena. Here in the zone it’s famous for its landfill.
We went there on Tuesday 9 Dec. 08 in a schooltrip for some hours, and we visited the dump and some sculptures. At the landfill, the guide explained us how it works: in an impermeable ditch they put the waste and, over there, they put ground. This ground will be cultivated and with tubes the toxic substances will be transported to some structures where they will be destroyed.
In the town centre we saw the sculptures. Someone (an artist) does them every year with a different theme, and this year the theme was the scarab. They were really special.

I think that the visit to the landfill of Sogliano was a great experience. I had never visited a landfill before, and with this visit I
have understood how a modern landfill works. The landfill of Sogliano, in fact, is one of the most modern landfills in Italy, and it has made Sogliano the second richest town in Italy.
In the landfill of Sogliano nothing is waste. Most of the waste is separated, recycled and resold as raw material. The waste which is not
recycled is put on a big hole (called Calanco) and then covered with sand and earth. The covered waste produces Methane because of the anaerobic decomposition, that is gathered and used to produce electric energy thanks to 4 Methane Generators.
I think that all of this is great, and that a landfill, if well maintained can be a source of revenue, and not only a waste of money and environment.

Alessandro Guagnelli, IV E, I.T.I.S “Blaise Pascal” (Cesena)

The trip to the Sogliano landfill was very interesting because we actually understood how a landfill works.
I think that their method of treating waste is very innovative, because by recycling they produce electricity, which is what we need today.
To combat the problem of pollution this is a good way.

Lorenzo Dulcini, IV E, I.T.I.S “Blaise Pascal” (Cesena)

On the 9th  december  we  went to Sogliano, for a visit to its dump. We did this trip for the Sustainable Development project, project that we deal with during some English hours. After a troubled  travel, we arrived at the dump.  A dump agent talked with us about the dump working,  the formation of  gullies and how these gullies are used in the dump. After this lesson we  went to see some gullies and how the trash is carried into them. The landfill is an important resource for the Sogliano municipality because with the recycle of waste  they can produce energy, and use the dump as a source of income.  Visitors come from all over of the world to see and try to apply this model to their countries. This visit was very interesting, because we could see  a real dump with our eyes and how waste is recycled.

Loris Lunedei, IV E, I.T.I.S “Blaise Pascal” (Cesena)

The trip to Sogliano was very educational.
Infact  i’ve learned a lot of about rubbish and dumps.
I’ve also learned the importance of recycling, and how it can improve the world.

TRIP TO SOGLIANO DUMP – Hi, I’m Arber. I want to talk about our trip to the Sogliano dump. This dump is special because it doesn’t polluter the environment. The rubbish that is burned doesn’t go in the air, but is used for electrical energy. This energy is sold to the national energy industry. This business is very fruitful for Sogliano. The rest of rubbish than can’t be burned is buried under the ground, with a special technique that doesn’t damage the local ground. I think all dumps have to follow the example of the Sogliano dump, because this method of disposal doesn’t damage the environment and is positive for the economy.

Dajci Arber, IV E, I.T.I.S “Blaise Pascal” (Cesena)

Sogliano Ambiente has all the requirements to manage and run a landfill in accordance with the highest standards of professionalism, in accordance with the latest specific regulations (Legislative Decree 36/03).
Aspects of management are many and should be dealt with in a special way, to avoid environmental desease and hygienic problems related to waste disposal. On our school trip I saw with my own eyes the hard work that the people do to maintain a situation which is as sustainable as possible.
I think it’s a good thing for the town of Sogliano because beside the profit they get from the rubbish they take in, they also produce electric energy by burning the not-recyclable rubbish and by selling it to the Italian electricity company called Enel.
I think this trip was a good point to view and understand some of the main advantages and problems that landfill can create.
